The Destin Fishermen’s
Foundation was organized in November 2008. Our focus is to provide an
assortment of support for our Destin fishermen and their families.
Throughout the year we participate in local fundraisers and have
available t-shirts for donations.
During the holiday season, we call on our gracious Destin community
for funds and canned goods. We have available in the Destin Co-op a
sign-in box where a local fisherman can drop his name or someone he
or she feels needs support. With these names the board of directors
makes a list. With this list and depending on the amount of support
collected, our families receive a honey baked ham, the equal
distribution of the collected canned goods and as much of a gift
card to a local merchant as can be afforded.
In 2008 we helped 50 families. In 2009 we helped 100 families. In
2010, we are hoping to help 200+ families.
If the collections exceed the totals needed to pay for the holiday
gifts, the funds are left in a “benevolent fund” and used throughout
the year to provide cost of living expenses to those Destin
fishermen that apply to the board.
The application for assistance is made available in the Destin
Co-op. All applications are voted on and passed with a majority vote
from the board of directors of the Destin Fishermen’s Foundation. Any
living expenses approved by the board are paid directly to the gas,
electric or phone company so as to avoid any misuse of the public’s
donations. |
